A journalist and writer, Mr.Sebastian Joseph was with Malayala Manorama Daily as a reporter for more than two decades. He worked in the districts of Calicut, Wayanad and Palakkad and had been the President of the Wayanad Press Club two times.
During his journalistic career he happened to meet very many personalities in various realms. He was immensely attracted by the unselfish actions of the early Naxalites. He befriended most of them who had participated in Thalasserry, Pulpally, Kuttiadi, Trissilery and Thirunelly actions. Many of them were old. If he had failed to record their memoirs without delay, they would have fallen into oblivion. So he interviewed more than forty personalities (Pulpally action-22, Thalasserry action-5, Thrissileri, Thirunelli actions-18, Kuttiadi action-2) and recorded their speech. He got them retrieved from the tape recorder, printed them and got their signature on each page after verification. Now these memoirs as well as their voices are intact with him, in his collection. It was a herculean task which took almost one and a half decades to prepare these manuscripts.
The book “Vasanthathinte Idimuzhakkam” is based on these memoirs, court records, police records and newspaper reports published at the time of actions. All the facts in the book are substantiated with footnotes. He has been meticulous in making the book to be reader friendly and interesting as a fiction. At the same time, it is objective in style.
He has won many a laurels and awards at State and National. The important awards include Statesman Award for Rural Reporting (1988), Kerala Press Academy’s K.C Sebastian Award for the Best Human Interest Story (1988), Coimbatore Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre’s C.H Mohamed Koya Memorial Award for Bold Reporting on a Common Cause leading to Public Awareness (1988), Kerala Press Academy’s K.C Sebastian Award for the best report in Developmental Journalism (1990), Kerala Junior Chamber’s Outstanding Young Person Award (1990), Alappuzha Vaadappuram P.K Bava Anusmarana Samithi’s Vaadappuram Bava Award, Kerala Press Academy’s Chovvara Parameswan Award for the Best News Scoop (1997), Trivandrum Swadeshabhimani Smaraka Committee’s Swadeshimani First Award (1998-1999), Trivandrum Swadeshabhimani Smaraka Committee’s Swadeshimani Second Award (2000-2001), Kerala State Government’s General Reporting Award (2000), Trivandrum Press Club’s K.C Sebastian Memorial Award for the Best Political Story (2001) and Calicut Press Club’s Award for Best Political Reporting (2002).
